Welcome to the Contemporary Women’s Writing Association (CWWA) Book Club website. The aim of bookclub.the-cwwa.org is to create a resource for members of book clubs and reading groups (and anyone interested in reading contemporary women’s texts). Here you will be able to access material and exchange opinions about contemporary women’s writing.

Researchers from the Contemporary Women’s Writing Association have been working with book clubs, including the Leeds Metropolitan University book club and the West Midlands Readers’ Network, to generate these resources and stimulate discussion of books by women writers.

Each of the books has a selection of questions to think about in discussion, as well as a number of relevant weblinks, and insights from researchers.

The reasoning behind the choice of texts is as follows: we wanted to cover a variety of material from 1970 to the present day; we wanted to cover a variety of genres (we are reading novels, short stories, autobiography and poetry) and we wanted to include writers from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Doris Lessing, The Fifth Child

Leila Aboulela, Minaret

Alice Walker, ‘Everyday Use’, in The Complete Stories and A.S. Byatt, ‘Art Work’, in The Matisse Stories

Zadie Smith, White Teeth

Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Carol Ann Duffy, The World’s Wife

Harriet Lane, Alys, Always (West Midlands Readers’ Network website)
